♻️ Environmental Badge from the DGT: What You Need to Know If You Drive in Mallorca
Sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important across Spain, and Mallorca is no exception. One key tool being used to regulate access to low-emission zones (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones or ZBE) is the environmental badge issued by Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
At Mallorca Solutions, we aim to provide you with a clear explanation of what this label is, how to obtain it, and its implications for driving on the island.
🔍 What is the Environmental Label?
This is a sticker issued by the DGT that classifies vehicles according to their energy efficiency and emissions level. It must be placed on the lower right corner of the front windshield. This helps local authorities restrict access for more polluting vehicles in certain urban areas.
🟢 Types of Badges
The DGT has defined four main categories:
-
Zero Emissions (Blue): 100% electric or plug-in hybrids with over 40 km electric range.
-
ECO (Green and Blue): Hybrids, mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids with limited range, or gas-powered vehicles.
-
C (Green): Petrol vehicles registered after January 2006 and diesel vehicles after September 2015.
-
B (Yellow): Petrol vehicles from the year 2000 and diesel from 2006.
Vehicles without a badge are considered the most polluting and often face access restrictions in cities.
📍 What Does This Mean in Mallorca?
While not yet required everywhere on the island, municipalities like Palma are planning to introduce Low Emission Zones (ZBE) soon. This means that access to certain areas will be restricted based on your vehicle’s environmental classification.
Obtaining your badge now ensures you're prepared for future regulations and helps prevent fines.
🔎 How to Check Which Badge Your Vehicle Gets
You can easily check (consultation of the badge category is free) your vehicle’s classification by entering your license plate number on the DGT’s official website:

📦 Where to Get the Badge
There are currently various ways to get these, and we recommend two official and reliable ways to obtain your environmental label:
1. At Correos (Post Office)
Visit any Correos office with your vehicle registration document and ID. They issue it there and then.
2. Online through the DGT Website
You can complete the process entirely online and have the label delivered to your home.
You will need a digital certificate or access via Cl@ve PIN.

💶 Approximate cost: Issuing the sticker with the corresponding emblem does cost €5. However, the price may increase due to shipping and other costs.
🚗 Is It Mandatory to Display the Badge?
Yes. Once you receive it, you must place it on the lower right-hand corner of your windshield (from inside the vehicle). Otherwise, in the case of motorcycles, it must be placed in a visible location on the vehicle. This will be required in areas where environmental regulations are enforced.
